Here we go with a brand refresh for Sniffnet!
Back in June 2023, this website was first published under the domain name sniffnet.net.
The domain was chosen in a hurry, and as time passed I grew more and more dissatisfied with it,
especially because of the “net” repeating in the app name and TLD.
Additionally, I originally acquired the domain without enabling the mail service, which made it impossible to have official emails for the project.
I could’ve just updated the old plan to add emails, but I took the opportunity to also change the domain name to sniffnet.app, which is more fitting for a software project and sounds less awkward.
As a nice bonus, the .app TLD is part of the HSTS preload list, meaning browsers enforce a secure HTTPS connection by default: perfectly in line with Sniffnet’s commitment to security and privacy.
The old domain still works and redirects to the new one, to avoid breaking existing links and killing SEO.
In the past few days I’ve done my best to make the transition as smooth as possible, updating all the backlinks I control and requesting reindexing from the most popular search engines to optimize the process.
Obviously I’ll keep sniffnet.net indefinitely reserved, to guarantee continuity and prevent impersonation and cybersquatting.
Along with the new domain, I finally set up 3 official mailboxes:
info@sniffnet.appfor general inquiriessecurity@sniffnet.appfor security-related matters and vulnerability reportssponsor@sniffnet.appfor sponsor inquiries and partnership opportunities
This is a meaningful step-up for the project, providing a more professional and trustworthy image to users and potential partners.
In particular, I believe that having a dedicated email for security is crucial for a project like Sniffnet, as it encourages responsible disclosure of vulnerabilities and complements the existing security policy well.
That said, GitHub Issues remains the preferred channel for any kind of report, suggestion or support request that can be discussed publicly for the benefit of the whole community.
